CORONARY ANGIOPLASTY

Coronary Angioplasty

Restoring Blood Flow to the Heart

Coronary angioplasty is a medical procedure designed to open blocked or narrowed arteries in the heart. This procedure is often necessary for individuals with coronary artery disease, a condition that can reduce blood flow to the heart, potentially causing chest pain or even leading to a heart attack.

During coronary angioplasty, a doctor inserts a small tube called a catheter into a blood vessel, typically in the arm or leg, and carefully guides it to the heart. At the tip of the catheter is a tiny balloon, which is inflated at the site of the blockage. This inflation pushes plaque (fatty deposits) against the artery walls, effectively opening the artery and improving blood flow.

In many cases, a small mesh tube known as a stent is also placed in the artery to keep it open permanently, further enhancing blood circulation.

Coronary angioplasty is a common and safe procedure that helps reduce chest pain, improve blood flow, and can reduce the risks of heart attacks.
